In an effort to combat “climate change,” the Biden administration is apparently planning to phase out the use of plastic flatware across all government agencies.
According to the New York Post, the government unveiled the strategy in July as part of its “Mobilizing Action on Plastic Pollution.”
“With the goal of reducing the worldwide production and use of virgin plastics, the President is committed to taking aggressive initiatives… to stop plastic pollution and is calling upon the global community to do the same,” the White House stated.
“Plastic and polystyrene beverage and food containers, bottles, straws, cups, cutlery, and throwaway plastic bags” are among the single-use plastics that the White House said it will no longer use. An earlier presidential order banning the sale of single-use plastics on public lands preceded this one.
The White House said that by 2027, “[T]he Biden-Harris Administration is establishing a new objective to phase out government acquisition of single-use plastics from food events and packaging, and from all federal operations by 2035.” Fulfilling the new objective will increase the agencies’ responsibilities under the [prior] Executive Order.
In situations involving “national security,” the government did make an exemption.
According to the White House, “the head of an agency may exempt certain agency activities and related personnel, and resources from the provisions of this order when national security is threatened to protect sources and methods from disclosure.”
Republicans in the legislature referred to the directive as “laughable” and “absurd.”
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) told the Daily Mail, “The world is on fire, and he’s worrying about plastic forks.”
Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) stated, “It’s a straight strike to that whole business. It’s more messaging and absurdity.” It’s also evident that not everyone is in attendance. It seems to have no bearing on deficit concerns, as it would result in increased expenses for many individuals.
