Satellite images have revealed something the American people need to know — China is building a nuclear bomber base on Woody Island in the South China Sea. This is not just another island. This is a fully armed military outpost right in the middle of one of the world’s most contested waterways, and it puts our allies — and our own forces — at greater risk. While the Biden administration may have looked the other way, President Trump is back in office and it’s time to face this threat head-on.
Let’s be clear: this is not new. China has been building up on this island for decades. But over the last ten years, they’ve turned it into a fortress. Woody Island now has a nearly 9,000-foot runway, 20 aircraft hangars, radar systems, missile batteries, and hardened shelters — all designed to support warplanes, including nuclear-capable H-6 strategic bombers. That means China can launch long-range bombers from this island and target U.S. forces across the Pacific. That’s not just a regional issue — that’s a direct challenge to American power and freedom in the Indo-Pacific.
This is not about defense. This is about domination. China is using its military to push smaller countries like Vietnam and the Philippines out of their own waters. These countries have long-standing claims in the South China Sea, but China is bullying them, taking over islands, and building military bases on them. And now, they’re cycling bombers in and out of Woody Island to send a message: they’re in control.
The Chinese Communist Party wants to control global trade routes, intimidate its neighbors, and threaten American allies. More than one-third of global trade passes through the South China Sea. If China controls it, they control the flow of oil, goods, and food to countries around the world. That gives Beijing a dangerous level of power — and we should not stand for it.
The Pentagon knows this. They’ve said that China’s island bases extend the reach of its air force. That’s military speak for “they can strike farther, faster, and with more firepower than before.” That includes the ability to threaten American aircraft carriers, U.S. bases in the Pacific, and even our homeland if left unchecked.
The Chinese government says they are just “safeguarding” their territory. Don’t be fooled. This is the same regime that spies on Americans, steals our technology, and lies about its intentions. Their so-called “peaceful rise” is a cover for military expansion and global influence. They want to replace America as the world’s leader — and this is how they plan to do it.
Thankfully, under President Trump’s leadership, America is no longer asleep at the wheel. We are rebuilding our Navy, strengthening our alliances with Japan, the Philippines, and Australia, and making it clear that the United States will defend international waters and freedom of navigation. That means increasing our presence in the South China Sea, conducting freedom of navigation operations, and putting pressure on Beijing to back down.
We cannot afford to be weak. Weakness invites aggression. The last time America showed weakness, China built these island bases in the first place. Now, with President Trump in charge, we have a chance to reverse course and stand tall. Peace through strength is not just a slogan — it’s a proven strategy.
