Illinois Democrats are poised to hold committee hearings on measures that will require all “assault weapons” to be registered with the state and charge gun owners a fee.
Rep. Bob Morgan (D) introduced the legislation, which also includes some firearm restrictions. He tweeted that the first hearing will be held very soon.
“Many folks have contacted my office asking how they can get engaged in ensuring the safe gun legislation in our state is passed,” Morgan wrote. “The first hearing for HB5855 will take place on Monday. Please see the linked tweet below if you have any queries about how to submit a witness slip!”
He then tweeted a link that allowed gun control supporters to create a “witness slip” to show their support for the legislation.
According to WGN-TV, Morgan’s measure outlaws “assault weapons.” It also prohibits “high-capacity magazines as well as rapid-fire devices…and would raise the minimum age of eligibility for a FOID Firearm Owners Id card from 18 to 21 except if the applicant is a member of the military.”
Residents in Illinois who already own what Democrats refer to as “assault weapons” would be permitted to keep them, but they’d be required to register them. Owners will also be charged a $25 fee.
Breitbart News reported that Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont (D) wants to reexamine his state’s “assault weapons” prohibition and abolish people’s privilege to own the guns even if they owned them before the ban went into force.
According to the CT Mirror, Lamont stated, “(AR-15s) should not be authorized in the state of Connecticut. I believe they are murderers… They are quite harmful in our neighborhood, in my opinion. If you leave them on the street, you’re not serious about combating crime.”
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, there are around 25 million firearms in circulation in the United States that Democrats refer to as “assault weapons.”
