Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) officially said on Tuesday that state law enforcement agencies will do their own investigation into the second attempt to kill former President Donald Trump.
According to the police, Ryan Routh may have broken state laws in more than one judicial circuit in Florida. These include the Palm Beach judicial circuit, judicial circuits that include Martin County, and maybe even the judicial circuit that Broward County represents.
DeSantis said, “I told state offices to move quickly and be completely open with the public.”
DeSantis also said that he doesn’t think it is in the country’s best interest for the FBI and the Department of Justice to lead the probe because they are trying to bring charges against Trump in Florida. DeSantis said that the FBI still hasn’t answered all of our questions about the mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017 and the first attempt on Trump’s life in July.
In addition to holding the suspect responsible, he said, “the public needs to know the truth about how this murder attempt came to be.”
The FBI confirmed on Monday that they got a report in 2019 saying that Routh illegally had a gun.
The Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be in charge of the state probe. A national investigator will work on the case, and Ashley Moody, the attorney general of Florida, will keep an eye on it.
Someone from Blaze News asked DeSantis if he agreed with acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe’s statement on Monday that the plans to keep Trump safe are working. DeSantis said he was excited to see what the state’s investigation reveals.
“We’ll look into how this guy was able to hide in the trees for 12 hours. I’m not sure how to answer that. Maybe our investigation will,” DeSantis said.
Even DeSantis, who had played golf at Trump International Golf Club before, knew where Trump was and where the would-be shooter would have set up shop because that is the most dangerous spot for security.
He said that he is worried that there might be another attempt on Trump’s life before the election in November because “this country is in a bad mood right now.”
The FBI confirmed on Monday that they got a report in 2019 saying that Routh had a gun, but they couldn’t confirm it.
“When investigators followed up on the tip, they talked to the supposed accuser but did not confirm that they gave the initial information. Officials in Honolulu got that information from the FBI,” according to Jeffrey Veltri, who is in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office.
