Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio didn’t hold back during his confirmation hearing Wednesday, delivering a stark warning about the future of America if the nation doesn’t wake up to the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Rubio outlined a grim scenario: in less than 10 years, China could virtually control every aspect of American life, from essential medicines to the entertainment industry.
“If we stay on the road we’re on right now, [in] less than 10 years, virtually everything that matters to us will depend on whether China allows us to have it or not,” Rubio cautioned. “Everything from the blood pressure medicine we take, to what movies we get to watch, and everything in between.” Rubio pointed to China’s dominance in critical minerals and its near-monopoly on electric vehicle (EV) battery production, warning that even the most basic American conveniences could soon hinge on the whims of the CCP.
The Florida senator, who has long sounded the alarm about China’s encroaching influence, was quick to stress the urgency of reversing course. “We’re going to live in a world where everything that matters to us on a daily basis, from our security to our health, will be dependent on whether the Chinese allow us to have it or not. That is an unacceptable outcome.”
Rubio’s criticisms of China are well-documented. The CCP banned him from entering the country in 2020 after his outspoken condemnation of their genocide against Uyghur Muslims. He has also been a leading voice in advocating for the U.S. to ban TikTok, calling out its ties to Beijing ByteDance Technology and its promotion of Chinese “national interests.”
President-elect Donald Trump, who nominated Rubio as secretary of state in November, praised him as a “very powerful Voice for Freedom” and a “fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries.” Trump’s selection of Rubio signals a continued focus on taking a hard line against China.
Rubio’s concerns extend beyond TikTok. He and Michigan Rep. John Moolenaar sent a letter to the Pentagon urging a ban on CATL, a Chinese EV battery manufacturer, from receiving U.S. military contracts. The lawmakers accused the company of advancing China’s People’s Liberation Army by supporting its battery infrastructure through CCP subsidies and tax incentives.
This is the kind of leadership America needs. Rubio’s unflinching stance on China stands in stark contrast to the Democrats, who seem more concerned with appeasing Beijing than protecting American sovereignty. For years, the left has turned a blind eye to China’s economic stranglehold and human rights abuses, while Republican leaders like Rubio and Trump have fought to expose the CCP’s threats.
America must prioritize self-reliance and disentangle itself from China’s grip. Whether it’s banning TikTok, halting military contracts with CCP-backed companies, or securing critical industries, Rubio’s roadmap is a much-needed wake-up call. Democrats can keep pandering to China, but under Trump and Rubio’s leadership, America will stand strong against adversaries and reclaim its independence.
