This week, House Republicans said they would look into how informants at the IRS were treated. These people were worried that top officials were slowing down the criminal probe of Hunter Biden, who is the son of the current president, in a manner that could have kept him from facing major charges.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, three committee chairs asked for records that could show contacts between the DOJ and Biden’s legal staff by September 25. This is the latest in a series of letters asking for information regarding the conduct of the investigation.

They referenced a letter that lawyer Abbe Lowell delivered to Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-MO) at the end of June, “asserting with no evidence” that IRS officials Gary Shapley along with Joseph Ziegler had broken federal law by disclosing information as whistleblowers. The GOP chairs also brought up a story from the New York Times that stated Biden’s lawyers told the DOJ that the accused whistleblowers violated the law and needed to be prosecuted.

The letter stated that “Hunter Biden’s lawyers are making a brazen effort to scare and frustrate the brave IRS whistleblowers who pointed out many problems with the Department’s probe into Hunter Biden.”

The GOP leaders also supported the whistleblowers, saying that they “did everything right by bringing up their real worries about how the Department investigated Mr. Biden.”

Congress heard evidence from the whistleblowers earlier in the year, and as a result, the DOJ along with Biden’s legal team reached a plea deal this summer that included tax evasion and firearms charges and may have spared the first son from prison. But the deal, which Republicans called a “sweetheart plea deal,” fell apart when a judge looked at a protection clause and had doubts about it.

In a statement, Biden’s lawyer Lowell maintained that a pre-trial diversion deal “remains valid and blocks any further charges from getting filed,” despite the DOJ’s indication this past week that special counsel David Weiss will seek an indictment directed at Biden on firearm charges by the end of this month.

James Comer (R-KY), chairman of oversight, along with Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the judiciary, joined Smith in signing the updated letter to Garland. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said earlier this week that each of the three committee chairs would be working together to oversee an impeachment investigation into Hunter’s dad, President Biden, which could involve the whole Biden family.
