House Democrats Inch Even Closer To Passing Total Gun Ban

House Democrats Inch Even Closer To Passing Total Gun Ban

The Democrats are on a warpath and have taken aim at law-abiding gun owners in America.

No Constitutional amendment is enough to prevent Democrats from advocating for the seizure of firearms from the American public.

Their goal is simple: Disarm the populous so we can push our radical agenda unencumbered.

The House Judiciary Committee advanced sweeping gun control legislation Thursday in the wake of high-profile mass shootings in New York, Texas, and Oklahoma.

The Protect Our Kids Act was passed along party lines, with 25 Democrats voting in favor and all 19 Republicans opposed. The legislation is expected to reach the House floor next week, and if it passes, faces a much tougher battleground in the Senate.

“Today, the House Judiciary Committee took the first, but hopefully not the last, step towards enacting commonsense gun violence prevention legislation,” Chairman Jerrold Nadler said.

“The American people are hungry for real solutions to the unconscionable wave of gun violence that is sweeping our country. The time for stalling, obstruction, and obfuscation in the face of senseless killing after senseless killing is over. The bold package we passed today will not only help prevent the next Uvalde or Buffalo — it will also keep our communities and schools safer by addressing many of the loopholes that allow guns to fall into the wrong hands.”

The legislation seeks to raise the legal age for purchasing semi-automatic centerfire rifles from 18 to 21 years old, create additional federal offenses for gun trafficking, and strengthen current gun laws by closing loopholes, which would be done by amending the definition of “manufactured firearms” to include using 3D printers to create guns, among other reforms, the committee’s Democrats said in a press release.

Republicans accused Democrats of making a partisan power grab while ignoring reforms they believe are a higher priority to stop violence.

“No one wants another tragedy. No one wants this to happen again. That’s why it’s regretful that Democrats have rushed to a markup today in what seems more like political theater than a real attempt at improving public safety or finding solutions,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, according to CNN.

The bill is not expected to pass the Senate even if it does pass the House thanks to a 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. Democrats hold 50 seats in the Senate, meaning they would have to get 10 Republicans on board to overcome the hurdle.

President Joe Biden gave a speech Thursday and called for more gun control, urging Congress to reinstate federal bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. He also pushed for increasing the age limit for someone wanting to purchase a gun and expanding background checks. However, he has yet to use his executive privilege as president or his influence in Congress to get legislation passed.

The renewed debate follows two mass shootings in May — a racially motivated supermarket shooting in Buffalo, New York, in which 10 black people were killed and a school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers were killed, along with the shooter — and a shooting Wednesday at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which resulted in five dead, including the shooter.
