Florida lawmakers are taking Trump’s immigration crackdown to the next level with a bold new proposal: mandatory death penalties for illegal immigrants convicted of capital crimes.
With Governor Ron DeSantis now backing the effort, Florida is poised to pass the toughest immigration laws in the country—and Democrats are melting down.
TRUMP Act: Florida Leading the Charge on Immigration Enforcement
The Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy (TRUMP) Act) was initially criticized by DeSantis for being “watered down”, but after revisions, he’s now fully on board.
During a special session beginning February 11, lawmakers will debate three bills that include:
- Mandatory death penalty for illegal immigrants convicted of capital crimes, including murder and child rape
- Maximum sentences for illegal immigrants convicted of any crime
- A state board of immigration enforcement led by DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other top officials
Senate President Ben Albritton and House Speaker Danny Perez say the legislation will “ensure Florida continues to lead by example with the strongest crackdown on illegal immigration in the nation.”
Democrats Sputter—But Florida Holds the Line
Leftists and legal activists are already screaming “unconstitutional”, pointing to Supreme Court precedents against automatic death sentences.
Maria DeLiberato, a death penalty opponent, whined:
“It is disheartening to see our lawmakers pass unconstitutional laws instead of searching for ways to reduce violence.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Jose Alvarez, who was born in Cuba, lashed out at Republicans:
“You all should be ashamed of yourself. This is not what this country was meant for.”
But Florida Republicans aren’t backing down.
DeSantis declared:
“With the enactment of these policies, Florida will help the Trump Administration to deliver on the President’s historic mandate to end illegal immigration. This is a big win for the people of Florida.”
Florida Sets the Example—Will Other States Follow?
With Trump ramping up deportations and cracking down on illegal immigration nationwide, Florida is leading the charge with policies designed to actually deter criminal aliens—instead of giving them a free pass like sanctuary states.
The message is clear: Florida is done playing nice, and illegal immigrants who commit heinous crimes will face the ultimate punishment.
