In Manhattan’s Washington Square Park, New Yorkers took out their pent-up aggression on NYPD officers, after being locked inside their apartments for more than a day due to blizzard-like conditions. A large group, who had gathered in the park to play in the snow, assaulted the officers with snowballs when the cops arrived on the scene.
This wasn’t just some harmless prank either, New Yorkers relentlessly pelted police officers with hardened masses of snow, injuring some and sending them to the hospital.
This chaotic scene, which unfolded on a Monday afternoon, is not just about snowballs. It is about respect—or rather, the lack of it—New Yorkers seem to have developed for law enforcement officers who risk their lives every day to keep residents safe.
This incident has rightly sparked outrage. Our officers, who are pillars of our community, deserve nothing less than our respect and gratitude. Yet, here we are, dealing with a situation where their safety was compromised by a mob who decided that pelting them with snow was acceptable behavior. This act was not just a prank; it was a disgraceful affront to those who serve and protect.
Governor Kathy Hochul took to social media to express her disapproval, calling the incident unacceptable.
This is Mamdani’s NYC. Teens scream in cop’s faces. Assholes threaten to sue them every time there’s an interaction. I’ve noticed a very distinct change since January. https://t.co/AzUu4M8BFp

Law enforcement leaders, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, condemned the attack, labeling it as criminal.
The NYPD is aware of certain videos taken earlier today in Washington Square Park showing individuals attacking cops.
I want to be very clear: The behavior depicted is disgraceful, and it is criminal.
Our detectives are investigating this matter.

The Police Benevolent Association has gone further, demanding that those responsible be arrested.
Unacceptable and outrageous — this is the environment that NYC police officers are up against. Our police officers are being treated for their injuries, but the case CANNOT end there. The individuals involved must be identified, arrested and charged with assault on a police… https://t.co/2qOTwnAFPi

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis did not mince words, calling the incident disgraceful and demanding accountability.
This is disgraceful. @NYCMayor and every elected official in our city should denounce this juvenile attack on our #NYPD. Back the blue and hold those who disrespect them accountable. https://t.co/9PPmHSeFU5

This incident is a wake-up call. It highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain respect for our law enforcement officers. It is a reminder that we must stand firm in our support for those who protect our freedoms and ensure our safety. Our police officers are not just another group of public servants; they are the backbone of our communities. They deserve our unwavering support and respect.
The restraint shown by these officers is nothing short of remarkable.
Is this the new normal in NYC? We'll take it up on @AmericaRpts https://t.co/YzsK6v9ONX— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) February 24, 2026
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose campaign messaging included suggesting cops were racist and that he planned to defund large swaths of the NYPD, issued a limp-wrist response to the video. No condemnation, no standing up for the officers injured during the attack, nothing.
I’ve seen the videos of kids throwing snowballs at NYPD officers in Washington Square Park.
Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving.
Treat them with respect. If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.

As we reflect on what happened in Washington Square Park, let us renew our commitment to upholding the principles of law and order. Let us ensure that those who attacked our officers are held accountable. And let us continue to advocate for a society where respect for law enforcement is a given, not an exception.
In these trying times, we must rally together to support our police officers. They stand on the front lines every day, facing dangers that most of us cannot imagine. The least we can do is stand by them, ensuring they have the respect, support, and resources they need to do their jobs effectively. This is not just about snowballs; it is about safeguarding the principles that make our nation great.
