A former boss of the Democratic Party in the California state Senate has switched parties and is now a Republican.
Steve Hilton, a Republican commentator, held a news meeting where Gloria Romero, the former Democratic Majority Leader of the California State Senate, announced her choice. Hilton livestreamed the event on his X account. A number of important Republican lawmakers joined her.
“I was the chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus and the majority leader of the Senate in this building behind me. But I’m leaving today. Goodbye! Enough is enough,” she said.
Romero remembered being the delegate for the Rev. Jesse Jackson at three different Democratic conventions and then for former President Barack Obama at the same three conventions. As a child, she said that Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy were her political heroes.
“This is not the Democratic Party I fought for in the past,” she said. “I no longer recognize it, and I can’t go on. As the sun was rising today, I changed my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican. Under Donald Trump, the GOP has become the protector of working people. I will vote for Donald Trump this fall, that’s for sure.”
She said that the Democrats were stifling freedom and even compared them to tyrants in Latin America to back up her claim. She said that the party throws people, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., out of the primaries and did a “political coup” against President Joe Biden.
Romero also said that the Democrats were against women’s rights. She said that they were weakening Title IX laws. She also said bad things about immigration, crime, and the rising cost of living.
“But maybe where I disagree with my old party the most now is when it comes to school choice, education freedom, and everyone’s right to good schools. This is especially true since Congressman Kevin Kiley and I have fought together for school choice for poor and minority kids who are stuck in schools that aren’t doing well,” she said.
