Not that long ago, Disney could do no wrong. In the mid-2010s it was the darling of moviegoers the nation over. It was rocking along with Marvel hits. And it even had a few scores with revitalized Star Wars projects. But all good things must come to an end, even a massive Hollywood studio that owns countless properties.
As Hollywood suffered from its own self-imposed embargo during 2020, Disney pushed content onto their new streaming service. But in the ensuing years, Disney’s cat came out of the bag. It exposed itself as a radical, left-wing propaganda machine. Top executives confessed their plan to push gay and transgender content into all their products and they went after red states to protect the LGBT agenda.
And now, they are resorting to pathetic gimmicks to save their bacon.
Total domestic box office gross revenues were above $11.3 billion in 2019, yet fell to $2.1 billion in 2020 as a result of COVID and the lockdown-induced recession, according to Box Office Mojo. Despite seeing a recovery to $4.5 billion in 2021 and $5.0 billion thus far in 2022, the number of new releases from production studios continues to lag.
Disney is therefore re-releasing the Star Wars solo film “Rogue One,” which debuted in 2016, as well as “Avatar,” which debuted in 2009. “Andor,” a spinoff series for the former flick, debuts on streaming platform Disney+ in the fall, while “Avatar: The Way of Water” debuts at the end of the year…
The news comes as Disney suffers criticism and market backlash for its involvement in left-wing social causes. In a high-profile loss for the entertainment conglomerate, “Lightyear” — which included a same-sex kiss — earned a paltry $51 million during its three-day opening, despite a lack of competition from other children’s movies and significantly more robust success from past “Toy Story” flicks. Disney apparently doesn’t think we’d notice this sleight-of-hand. They are releasing old movies, which already made large sums, at the end of this year to boost box office numbers. Despite a revival at the movies, post-COVID, Disney has stumbled big time. Their gay Lightyear movie was a pathetic failure.
(Keep in mind, that when a Disney movie fails at the box office, it also means other “tie-in” products like toys, games, and TV shows will also fail. Meaning, they will lose much more than we see.)
It seems woke Disney fears backlash from its shareholders. If they report that 2022 was a loss at the box office, even a little bit, heads will roll. So, their solution? Drag out old movies everyone has seen already (and are available online), in a desperate bid to prop up their numbers. They are even dragging Sony into this scheme, by getting them to re-release their latest Spider-Man movie.
All of this comes as Hollywood implodes. Streaming is keeping some of it alive, as are a few non-political moves. But movie studios’ obsession with shoving woke ideology down America’s throat is not going as planned. Movies or TV shows that are patently left-wing are getting flushed down the toilet.
Meanwhile, movies like Top Gun: Maverick and streaming series like The Terminal List—panned by liberals for being “too” conservative have been massive successes. You won’t see Tom Cruise or Amazon towing out old “hits” to save their 2022. Because they were willing to provide content that doesn’t talk down to patriots or scold them for not jumping on the latest (and ever-shifting) woke bandwagon.
