Even Democrats Are Taking Donald’s Side Now

According to a Harvard-Harris poll, the majority of respondents think that former President Trump deserves to be pardoned if he is found guilty and given a jail sentence for tampering with confidential data. A prospective presidential pardon was supported by 53% of respondents, while 47% opposed it, according to the study. Trump’s pardon request is primarily divided along partisan lines, with 81% of Republicans supporting it and only 31% of Democrats.

In a different survey, 64% of Republican, as well as Republican-leaning respondents, said they would continue supporting Trump if he ran for president in 2024. However, 56% of those surveyed in the same poll thought Trump should withdraw from consideration. If Trump wins the Republican nomination, President Biden’s reelection bid might bring them together once more. The tone of Biden’s campaign, he said, will depend on “who his opponent is.”

These results offer a fascinating window into the political environment and raise concerns about the reasons for such emotions.

The outcomes don’t seem all that startling at first. The idea that the majority of Republicans would support Trump’s pardon, given that this indictment and others have obvious political undertones. It seems obvious that the purpose of these legal activities is to try to sway the results of the approaching presidential election. Considering that the previous president served as their boogeyman for a while, it is also not surprising that the majority of Democrats oppose forgiving him.

However, what about the 30% of Democrats who said they thought Trump needed to be pardoned? Given the current political atmosphere, it is surprising that roughly one-third of Democratic voters would be in favor of such a move. Despite their own distaste for Trump, a sizable number of Democrats favors pardoning him, which raises the possibility that the Justice Department’s prosecution was motivated by politics. Maybe some people are ready to set aside their personal views on Trump from their evaluation of the accusations leveled against him.

It’s also worth guessing that many of these individuals do not think that Trump should get jail time or other harsh penalties, even though they disagree with him and think he was wrong. Some Democrats may conclude that Trump should receive the same compassionate treatment if the Justice Dept. is unable to find any evidence against the former president that isn’t worse than the email crisis involving Hillary Clinton.
