Trump welcomed Putin’s choice for Biden during a rally in South Carolina, calling it a “great compliment” and highlighting his tough posture toward the Kremlin throughout his administration.
“President Joe Biden is “more seasoned” and “more predictable” than President Donald Trump, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump responded to this by calling it a “wonderful compliment.”
“I have received a fantastic compliment from President Putin of Russia,” stated Trump on Wednesday during a campaign event in North Charleston, South Carolina.
He went on, “He just stated that he would far prefer to have Joe Biden as president than Trump.” That is a compliment, right? Naturally, he would say that as well.”
The former president went on to discuss his policies against Russia while he was in the White House.
“Trump stated at the North Charleston rally that Putin would undoubtedly prefer Biden’s win because he personally thwarted Russia’s interests while in office, particularly with regard to the contentious construction of the Nord Stream 2 German-Russian pipeline, which would have transported natural gas from Russia to Europe.”
Trump then said, “I stopped Nord Stream 2, and [Biden] approved it right after I left, so Putin is not a fan of mine, actually.” He was alluding to his role as president in imposing sanctions on the pipeline and Biden’s subsequent decision to lift those sanctions, which many had feared would give Russia energy dominance over Europe.”
Trump then shifted his focus to President Biden, asserting that Putin is aware that “he’s going to be granted whatever he wants, including Ukraine,” under his leadership.
The former president made these comments after Putin informed a reporter that Biden would be Russia’s preferred choice to hold the presidency.
Putin’s open admission appears to represent a substantial shift from the Kremlin’s apparent support for Trump. There could be more to this than meets the eye, though.
“[Biden] is a more dependable, seasoned individual. He is an old-school politician. When asked to select between the two, Putin responded, “But we would work with any leader of the United States who is trusted by the American people,” during an interview with broadcaster Rossiya 1 TV. “Regarding the war in Ukraine, which has been a divisive topic in American politics, Putin and Trump’s remarks highlight a larger discussion about the character of U.S. foreign policy. More conjecture over Washington’s future strategy toward the Kremlin and other foreign policy matters will surface as the election season drags on.
