Democrats To Use Home Insurance To Punish Gun Owners

Legislator Mike Gipson (D) of California proposed a bill on Friday that would compel insurance companies to give an annual report to legislators that lists all homeowners who own firearms.

By Jan. 1, 2026, an insurer would have to include questions on all applications for renters’ or homeowners’ insurance requesting specific information about the presence of any firearms held at a household, nearby structures, or vehicles kept on the site of the property subject to any insurance policy, according to the bill, AB 3067.

“The measure would restrict the inclusion of sensitive identifying information in the report and would require an insurer to annually submit this information to the Dept. of Insurance and the state Legislature starting on Jan. 1, 2027,” the text adds.

The law then gives insurers a set of guidelines to follow in order to acquire the data that Assembly Member Gipson and his primary co-author, state senator Catherine Blakespear (D), are seeking:

“An application for renters’ or homeowners’ insurance should include questions about all of the following, in addition to current regulations:””(1) The existence and quantity of guns stored within the home, including any attached structures.”

“(2) Whether the firearm is kept out of use in a lockable container within the house and any attached buildings.”

“(3) The quantity of guns maintained in a car on the property covered by the relevant insurance policy, as well as whether or not those firearms are kept safely within a lockable container when not in use.”

Referral of AB 3067 to a committee for continuation is currently pending.
