South Carolina Locks Down Graham's Senate Seat Before Democrats Can Even Draft a Press Release

Darline Graham Nordone was sworn in as the newest United States Senator on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET — just four days after her brother Lindsey Graham's death at age 71 on July 10. She is the first woman ever to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

The seat stays red. And Democrats didn't even have time to start scheming.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster made the announcement Monday, calling it his "duty and honor to name someone to serve in the place of this irresistible man, this irreplaceable man, this extraordinary man, for the remainder of his term." McMaster didn't leave any ambiguity about the choice. "It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now," he said at an emotional press conference.

President Trump had personally recommended the pick, calling the appointment "a fabulous tribute to Lindsey." When the president of the United States and your governor are on the same page before the other side even gets their talking points together, that's how you protect a majority.

Darline Graham is 62 years old, lives in Lexington with her husband Larry Nordone, and has two daughters. She holds a bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston and a master's in rehabilitation counseling. She's served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind since 2019, and previously held roles with Clemson University and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. She's not a political operative. She's a public servant who's spent decades in state government.

The family backstory matters here. When Lindsey Graham was 22 and Darline was 13, both of their parents died within 15 months of each other. Lindsey took legal guardianship of his little sister. He raised her. Now she finishes his work. According to Roll Call, she's the first sister to succeed a brother in the United States Senate.

The appointment covers only the remainder of Graham's fourth term, which expires January 3, 2027. A special Republican primary is set for August 11, with candidate filing opening July 21.

Graham was well liked in Congress. Even Senate Democratic Whip Richard Durbin kept the temperature low. "I'm still heartbroken over Lindsey, but I'm glad his sister is here," the Illinois Democrat said. When the opposition party's whip is offering kind words instead of objections, you know the pick was handled right.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune moved quickly to get Darline Graham sworn in Tuesday afternoon, keeping the GOP's fragile majority intact without a single day of unnecessary vacancy. Compare that to how Democrats have handled their own seat vacancies in recent years — months of infighting, loyalty tests, and identity-politics checklists that turn every appointment into a circus.

McMaster did what governors are supposed to do: move fast, pick someone qualified, and keep the seat warm for voters to decide the rest. The August 11 primary will determine who carries the Republican banner into the midterms. Until then, South Carolina has a senator who earned a seat the old-fashioned way — by being part of a family that already gave everything it had to public service.
