Matt Gaetz, the firebrand former congressman from Florida and President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, is once again in the crosshairs of the media and the Department of Justice (DOJ). The New York Times revealed a DOJ document alleging that Gaetz made payments via Venmo to women who testified they had sexual relationships with him in exchange for money. These accusations come as Gaetz’s nomination heads to the Senate, with Trump unapologetically backing his choice.
The Justice Department spent three years investigating Gaetz on charges ranging from sex trafficking to violations of the Mann Act. In the end, prosecutors declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence. But that hasn’t stopped the DOJ from allegedly leaking documents—a move Trump’s spokesperson Steven Cheung slammed as a blatant example of weaponized justice.
“The Justice Department investigated Gaetz for years, failed to find a crime, and now they’re leaking false information to smear the next attorney general,” Cheung said. Gaetz, who has categorically denied all accusations, is standing firm, meeting with GOP senators alongside Vice President-elect J.D. Vance to shore up support for his confirmation.
While the Senate Judiciary Committee hasn’t scheduled a confirmation hearing yet, Republican lawmakers like Josh Hawley and Mike Lee have voiced support for Gaetz’s right to address the allegations under oath. Lee acknowledged the seriousness of the accusations but pointed out that the DOJ’s decision not to prosecute should carry significant weight.
Trump has doubled down on Gaetz, calling the leaks a disgraceful attempt to derail his administration’s agenda before it even begins. “This is why Matt is perfect for the job—he’s not afraid to take on the swamp,” Trump reportedly told advisors. With Gaetz’s nomination, Trump is signaling his intention to clean house at the DOJ, a department he has long accused of being rife with corruption and political bias.
Democrats, predictably, are up in arms, with whispers of protests and media campaigns to block Gaetz’s confirmation. Meanwhile, Trump continues to make it clear that his administration will not bow to manufactured outrage or political smears.
This latest hit piece from the DOJ and mainstream media only underscores how desperate the left is to cling to their crumbling narrative. Trump’s unapologetic support for Gaetz sends a message: the days of unchecked weaponization of government institutions are over.
