Democrat Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, made a new appeal to the federal government on Wednesday in response to the large number of migrants arriving in NY City.
Hochul said, “We truly are expecting a government reaction to this – to take ownership of a catastrophe and we will be there to assist, but this belongs to the federal govt,” without specifically condemning the Biden admin’s open-border policies.
Dems continue to accuse GOP leaders, such as TX Gov. Greg Abbott, of busing migrants to their self-declared sanctuary towns despite their calls for the federal government to take action.
The governor of New York wished for the government to “understand that this is a humanitarian issue.”
Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Republican running against Hochul for governor in Nov, called for an end to the state’s sanctuary laws during a press conference on Wednesday.
“New York should stop using its “sanctuary state” laws,” according to Zeldin. “We witnessed it when a multibillion-dollar Excluded Workers Fund was established. To pay for it, they increase taxes.”
“A provision known as the “Green Light Law” forbids federal law enforcement from having access to DMV records. In light of the recent expansion of Medicaid overall, more illegal immigrants are now receiving additional tax funding,” he said.
The Biden admin has already allocated a few million dollars to New York City to help with the cost of building emergency shelters for the influx of migrants. However, Mayor Eric Adams predicted that by the end of the fiscal year, the cost of housing the migrants will exceed $1 billion.
Adams proclaimed a state of emergency in New York City last week during a press conference due to the inflow of refugees. According to him, the city receives five to six buses from Texas every day.
Adams declared that “we are in a crisis position. Our shelter system in New York City today houses more than 61,000 people.”
To meet the massive influx of migrants in need of accommodations, the city erected more than 40 emergency shelters. NYC officials intend to temporarily accommodate 200 families in a fancy hotel in midtown as part of their newest effort to house the homeless.
On Wednesday, Pelosi acknowledged that the govt might be assisting New York better, but she continued to place the blame on Texas Gov. Abbott.
“The ability to grant people a work visa is likely the most crucial thing we can do,” according to Pelosi. “And that would release a lot of the community’s strain. To simply load people onto a bus and transport them somewhere, though, is a very contentious move that they’ve taken.”
