Gavin Newsom Shocks With Over-The-Top Gun Comment

Gavin Newsom Shocks With Over-The-Top Gun Comment

Governor of California, Gavin Newsom (D) stated on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki on April 9, 2023, that he believes Florida’s newly approved constitutional carry legislation permits anyone to carry “weapons of war.”

Psaki noted that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) approved constitutional carry legislation on the same day that thousands of demonstrators gathered at the Tennessee Capitol to demand stricter gun control.

She asked Newsom to comment on the disparity between the demands of gun control advocates and DeSantis quietly passing legislation to abolish the necessity for Florida citizens to obtain a concealed carry permit.

Newsom stated that DeSantis signed the law in an office because he was “frightened” of the citizens of Florida, who “overwhelmingly opposed” constitutional carry.

“I believe the majority of NRA members likely opposed that position,” he stated.

Newsom made no mention of the NRA’s support for constitutional carry legislation.

The governor then addressed constitutional carry in general, adding, “No background checks? Is there truly none? What, no training? “I mean, why would we do that with military weapons?”

Constitutional carry applies to concealable handguns, not firearms labeled by Dems. as “assault weapons” or “weapons of war.” Furthermore, federal law mandates an FBI background check when purchasing a new or used weapon at retail, and Florida’s constitutional carry statute doesn’t alter that.
