Border crossers and illegal immigrants entering Chicago, Illinois, a sanctuary city, are coming with colds, and pink eye, as well as the Chinese coronavirus, and Mayor Lori Lightfoot has proclaimed a state of emergency.
Over 8,000 illegal immigrants and border crossers have entered Chicago since August 2022; the majority of them came by bus from the US-Mexico border.
The New York Times reports that newcomers to Chicago are arriving sick and leaving residents with a bill for $125 million by the end of the following month, with state taxpayers footing the tab for $30 million.
The Times reports:
“Many of the migrants, especially expectant mothers and young children, are sick with colds, pink eye, even Covid-19, making it difficult for volunteers and municipal officials to locate medical care for them.”
Maria Hadden, a City Councilwoman from the Far North Side who represents Rogers Park, said, “It’s unsustainable.”
As is to be expected, border crossers and illegal immigrants arriving in Chicago have trouble speaking English and need assistance finding places to stay. Illegal immigration, which is a source of dispute among locals, is only aggravating the city’s economic and social problems.
A councilwoman from Chicago asked the Times, “Whose park district is going to shut down in order to move programming? Which school isn’t going to be in a position to carry out summer programming? Will certain events at Navy Pier have to be canceled?”
Just a few days before President Joe Biden lifts one of the last remaining border rules, known as Title 42, at the border, as Breitbart News stated, Lightfoot proclaimed a state of emergency.
“We’re at our breaking point… In need of immediate assistance and shelter for 48 more people and families who arrived today,” according to Lightfoot. “Chicago simply lacks the resources or infrastructure to continue caring for migrants in a humane manner.”
Lightfoot claims that Chicago’s “pre-existing facilities as well as our newly built facilities are full” to the brim with border crossers as well as illegal immigrants, forcing the city to lodge recent arrivals in police stations and closed schools, as Breitbart News has documented.
