Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, said that the Canadian wildfires, which have led to record-low air quality in several regions in the northeast, are a consequence of the “climate crisis.”
“Winds have been blowing bad air from Canadian wildfires towards the northeast all this week.” The Washington Post reported that “more than 400 active fires—more than 240 of which were labeled as ‘out of control’—were burning in Canada, putting the country on course to have its worst wildfire season ever recorded.”
Because of the dangerous airborne particles, the sky became dark and orange and was felt as far away as Florida. According to Breitbart News, an air quality health alert is in effect for select locations, including Long Island, the New York City metro area, Eastern Lake Ontario, and Central and Western New York.
The record-breaking air quality won’t improve until the winds change to the north, which might happen as late as Friday.
Despite admitting she isn’t an expert on climate change, Jean-Pierre used the rare occasion to further Biden’s legislative agenda of purported climate policies.
During the White House news briefing, Jean-Pierre said that it was “yet another frightening example of how the climate crisis is disrupting our everyday lives and our communities.The west coast has been coping with this for a while.
“So, alas, this is not unusual. The situation is simply getting worse,” she said. “However, the president has prioritized climate change because of this. He has been acting aggressively because of this.”
“But once again, I’m not an authority. However, it is evident that the previous several decades have shown that climate change has been a serious issue. The research demonstrates it to us,” she said.
