Shapiro’s Jewish heritage and support for Israel annoy many on the left, but Fetterman—an outspoken supporter of Israel—has further reasons for advising Harris against choosing Shapiro. The site reports that Fetterman’s advisors advised Harris’ team that the U.S. senator believes Shapiro is unduly focused on his own goals. “His misgivings about Shapiro are a reflection of the long-standing struggle between the two aspirational Democrats in a state that is vital to politics.”
“It’s important to note that potential running mates are the subject of close examination, and choosing one has significant consequences that might influence the Democratic Party for many years to come.” Fetterman’s agents expressed their concerns to the party’s future standard-bearer team.” Shapiro is now the front-runner on Harris’s short list of potential vice presidential candidates. This weekend, Harris is interviewing potential candidates. She also has a Tuesday event in Philadelphia with her running companion.”
“Fetterman’s reps conveyed to Harris’ aides that one of the major differences the men had occurred while they served together on Pennsylvania’s Board of Pardons,” according to three sources who requested anonymity to discuss private discussions.”
“Fetterman aimed to bring the organization back to life and give some of the prisoners second chances. Frequently adopting a more stringent stance, Shapiro stated that although he supported criminal justice reform, “structural” reforms had no place in the commutation process. Fetterman and Shapiro specifically disagreed over the fate of Dennis and Lee Horton, brothers convicted of a 1993 shooting and robbery, who maintained their innocence for decades.”
According to reports, Harris may make her announcement as soon as Monday, and she and her running companion will make an appearance at a Philadelphia rally on Tuesday. Josh Shapiro was purportedly Kamala Harris’s choice for a running mate in a video that Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker posted on social media last week. However, some speculated that this was perhaps a ploy to get Harris to choose Shapiro, or possibly a trial balloon.
