Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA), the present minority leader in the United States House of Representatives, launched his candidacy for Speaker of the House on Wednesday afternoon, as the post-election leadership competition began.
“In the previous century, Republicans had only switched the House from Democrats four times, in 1946, 1952, 1994, and 2010. Only twice in four years or fewer did that flip occur,” McCarthy stated in a long letter to his colleagues before declaring his intention to “run for Speaker of the People’s House” and soliciting support from his colleagues.
“While a number of contests remain open,” McCarthy wrote, “I can confidently declare that we intend to join that list, build on our big gains from the last cycle, and fulfill our goal of winning back the House.”
“This was the most costly and, probably, most competitive midterm election in American history. Despite this, our message and candidates won crucial seats across the country, including some in districts that President Biden won by double digits only two years ago—including the first incumbent Chair of the DCCC to be ousted in 42 years.”
“This is no easy task. With our Commitment to America, we have effectively prosecuted the case against the Democrats’ failed policies while outlining our proposal for a new direction. Nonetheless, I believe you are aware that obtaining the majority is merely the beginning. What we do with our majority will now be judged. The hard work now begins.”
