It appears that President Joe Biden would oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require verification of citizenship before allowing someone to register to vote in federal elections.
Over 100 House Republicans co-sponsored the SAVE Act, which Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) presented. It would require state election officials to require candidates for voter registration to provide proof of American citizenship before adding them to the voter lists.
In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Roy stated, “Even though the law clearly says you must be a citizen, federal law has been construed to preclude states from checking to determine if you’re a citizen.”
The Biden administration essentially promised to veto the SAVE Act if it reached the president’s desk in a statement they published this week.
The White House released a statement that said, “The administration firmly opposes H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.”
“Voting in federal elections by someone who is not a citizen is already against the law; it is a federal offense that carries jail time and penalties. The purported rationale for this measure rests on easily refutable lies. Falsely claiming citizenship or illegally casting a ballot in an election carries further penalties, such as expulsion from the country and a lifetime ban from reentering. Effective measures are currently in place in most states to confirm voters’ eligibility and preserve the integrity of voter rolls.”
“This law would make it far more difficult for all eligible Americans to register to vote and increase the likelihood of removing eligible voters from the voter lists. However, it would do nothing to protect our elections. It is extremely unusual for noncitizens to disobey the law by casting ballots in federal elections since the data clearly shows that the rules now in place to prohibit them from doing so are effective.”
Rather, the Biden administration believes that Congress should enact the Freedom to Vote Act, which would allow millions of criminals who are no longer incarcerated to regain their right to vote. The law would also introduce automatic voter registration and mail-in voting on a national level.
House Democrats are forcing votes against the SAVE Act, as Breitbart News revealed, placing vulnerable swing district elected officials in a difficult position only months before the November election.
Americans strongly support requiring evidence of U.S. citizenship in order to cast a ballot.
According to a 2022 survey, 65% of Americans—48% of Democrats, 62% of swing voters, and 88% of Republicans—support demanding proof of citizenship in order to cast a ballot.
