Basically, he said that economic penalties are weakening the dollar and making the US less financially stable around the world.
Trump wants the lifting of sanctions because he thinks that the economic punishments given to countries that are against the US Empire are hurting the US dollar disproportionately.
The national security regime’s plan to slow down the rise of new regional powers like China, Iran, and Russia through sanctions has backfired as these Eurasian countries have looked for other ways to do business and handle their finances. The desire for American dollars has gone down because of this.
“I actually used sanctions, but I only put them on and took them off very quickly because they kill your dollar and everything it stands for. We need to keep that as the world’s currency. Trump went on, You’re losing Iran. Russia is going too. China is out there trying to make their currency the most important one.”
During his time in office, Trump increased sanctions against both Iran and Russia. These included penalties against Russia for taking over Crimea and sanctions against Iran because his government ended the Iran nuclear deal. Because Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Biden administration has kept putting sanctions on the country. The purpose of these sanctions was to cut the two countries off from each other and hurt their economies by making it harder for them to access banks and foreign markets.
Trump knows that sanctions are bad for business and thinks that lifting them could boost the US dollar and stop countries like Russia and Iran from making business deals with China and other Eurasian countries.
It’s safe to say that the US’s foreign policy is a mess. It’s good for an out-of-touch class that doesn’t care about how people in Middle America make a living. The US should have a normal, cautious foreign policy, focused only on protecting the Western Hemisphere and its southern border with Mexico. These are the only places that are very important to the US from a strategic point of view.
