Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newsom depicts Alabama police forcing young women to take pregnancy tests in an advertisement that aired on Sunday.
There are no exclusions for rape or incest under Alabama’s abortion ban. Republicans are currently attempting to make it illegal for young women to travel for abortion services. As he posted the video on X, Newsom declared, “We cannot let them get away with this.”
The footage shows two youthful, twentysomething women heading toward the Alabama state line in an SUV.
“We’re getting closer.” One woman glances back to check if anyone is following them, then confidently tells the driver, “We will make it.”
At that moment, an Alabama State police car honks its horn and asks the women to pull over, causing the women to start crying.
The announcer states, “Trump Republicans want to condemn young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care.”
“Stop them by taking action,” the narrator continues, following the police officer’s request that the women get out of the car so they may “take a pregnancy test.”
It then points users to a website that California Governor Gavin Newsom sponsors, with the following information:
“The Republicans’ goal is not just to overturn Roe v. Wade. They now seek to fully restrict women’s and girls’ freedom to travel by locking them down. Three states—Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Alabama—are debating legislation that would prohibit teenagers from leaving the state to obtain an abortion without parental permission, regardless of the circumstances, such as incestuous relationships or domestic violence. These are states that essentially seek to incarcerate young girls and women. It is a covert national abortion ban that keeps women from being able to move to a state where abortion is legal. This effectively removes the freedom to travel that the United States Constitution’s Fourth Amendment guarantees.
Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest.
Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care.

Social media users attacked the advertisement, claiming that Newsom went too far.
“This is pure propaganda,” remarked one person.
Another said, “Yet families, businesses, and congressional seats cannot leave California fast enough.”
Another person responded, “Even you are insane about this.”
