Another Democrat Switches Sides, See Why Here

This week saw the loss of a second state House representative for Louisiana Democrats to the Republican Party in the last month.

State Representative Jeremy LaCombe, a Democrat elected to a state House district in 2019, said Monday that he will change his party identification to Republican.

Furthermore, it was first unclear what caused LaCombe to change parties because he did not provide any explanation.

This comes after Republicans in the state House acquired a supermajority in the middle of March after state Representative Francis Thompson declared his intention to switch parties. Thompson’s flip from Democrat to Republican handed the Louisiana House Republicans a supermajority for the very first time in history. Republicans in Louisiana now have a veto-proof supermajority in both the Senate and House.

Despite switching parties, House Democrat Caucus Chairman Sam Jenkins declared that LaCombe still holds “the same values” as Democrats.

“House Dems. are going to continue to stand up for Louisiana’s working people,” Jenkins stated. “During this legislative session, we look forward to working with Representative LaCombe to raise wages, lower costs, improve our schools, and implement insurance reform that benefits Louisiana families along with small companies.”

According to Breitbart News, Democrat state members switching sides and one special election in the previous month granted Republicans three additional supermajorities in state legislatures, raising the total to 25 throughout the country.

Prior to LaCombe, Thompson and North Carolina state Representative Tricia Cotham both left the Democratic Party in the prior month, while state Rep. Dan Knodl (R) beat a Democrat lawyer to win a vacant state Senate seat in Wisconsin.

Republicans in North Carolina and Louisiana are now able to overturn Democrat governors’ vetoes, while Republicans in Wisconsin are just two seats away from obtaining the right to overrule Democrat governor Tony Evers’ vetoes.
