In advance of his anticipated campaign kickoff this week, Democrat President Joe Biden is far behind a generic Republican, according to an NBC News survey. This is a serious setback for the current president, who is expected to run for re-election.

Only 41% of the respondents said they would probably or certainly vote for Biden in November 2024 if he runs for president and is the Democrat candidate. In contrast, 47% of respondents indicated they would probably or absolutely vote for the Republican nominee, whoever it may be, if Biden is the Democrat nominee.

As a result, just days before he is slated to start his reelection campaign, Biden is six points behind. This is a big setback for the incumbent president and a plus for the growing Republican field, which is now topped by former President Trump. According to reports, Biden will formally kick off his 2024 reelection campaign on Tuesday with the release of a video.

Eight hundred registered voters were surveyed between April 14 and April 18 for the NBC News study, which was carried out by Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies. Its margin of error is 3.46 percent. Therefore, Biden’s 6-point deficit is far beyond the survey’s margin of error.

Furthermore, there is a noticeable difference in intensity between Biden and a typical Republican. Only 21% of respondents indicated that they would “definitely” support Biden, while 20% indicated that they “probably” would. 39 percent of the respondents said they would “definitely” vote for the ultimate Republican nominee if they were up against Biden, while 8 percent indicated that they would “probably” do the same.

It follows that Biden has much work to do to win over Democrats who are wary of supporting him again for a variety of reasons. The “definitely” voting figures for the GOP candidate are technically in a near tie with Biden’s combined “probably” and “definitely” numbers. The recent entry of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson into the Democrat presidential primary contest has some on the left sensing blood in the water surrounding Biden.

Democrats are doubtful to take Kennedy or Williamson seriously; for example, there is almost no possibility that Biden will take part in any debates. However, the fact that there are divisions like this worries Democrats.

The NBC survey also indicates that people are not overjoyed by the prospect of a Trump-Biden rematch in 2024, which is now likely. Nevertheless, the high support for the eventual Republican candidate should reassure those who are worried about Trump’s electability. The 39 percent of respondents that said they would unquestionably support the Republican nominee meant they would support Trump, if he were the candidate, or someone else as well.

Although a recent Rasmussen Reports poll revealed that Trump was increasing his lead to 7 percent, this NBC poll doesn’t seam to have tested a nationwide ballot test for a Trump vs Biden rematch.
