Secretary of State Marco Rubio didn’t waste time on his first overseas trip—he delivered a blunt warning to Panama: cut China’s grip on the Panama Canal or face U.S. action.
President Trump has made it clear that China’s growing control over the strategic waterway is a direct threat to U.S. national security—and he’s ready to take drastic measures to fix it.
China’s Grip on the Panama Canal Sparks U.S. Action
The Panama Canal isn’t just a shipping route; it’s a critical artery of global trade. Nearly 40% of U.S. container traffic flows through it, and the last thing America can afford is Beijing holding the keys to the gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Trump didn’t mince words:
“China’s running the Panama Canal. It was given to Panama foolishly. They violated the agreement, and we’re going to take it back—or something very powerful is going to happen.”
While he later downplayed the need for U.S. military force, the message was clear: Panama must break free from Chinese influence—now.
Panama Scrambles to Reassure the U.S.
Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino tried to calm the waters, insisting there was no real threat to the canal’s sovereignty and proposing technical-level talks with Washington.
Mulino also announced Panama would not renew its participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a move meant to appease the Trump administration. Additionally, he launched an audit of a Hong Kong-based company controlling ports on both sides of the canal, but Trump has already dismissed that as “not enough.”
Trump’s America First Approach: No More Weakness
For decades, weak U.S. leadership allowed China to expand its economic and military footprint in Latin America. Trump isn’t having it. His administration has already slapped major tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, proving that economic pressure is on the table.
And while Mulino tries to downplay any military action, history tells us one thing: when U.S. interests are threatened, Trump doesn’t back down.
This showdown over the Panama Canal is just beginning—and China is about to learn that America is done playing nice.
