With Trump’s bold threats of tariffs and even military intervention, combined with Mexico’s sudden newfound willingness to crack down, cartel leaders are realizing that business as usual is no longer an option.
According to the New York Times, cartel bosses are now going into hiding, shuttering fentanyl labs, selling off assets, and even bolstering their arsenals in a desperate bid to survive. One cartel operative admitted he’s taking extreme precautions, fearing that American troops could soon be knocking on his door. “You can’t be calm; you can’t even sleep,” said a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa cartel.
This reaction isn’t paranoia—it’s reality. The Trump administration has officially labeled these violent cartels as terrorist organizations, meaning they are now in the crosshairs of America’s full force. If U.S. forces get involved, the cartels know they’re outmatched. As one cartel member put it, “If a helicopter comes here and soldiers drop out, 20 or 30 of them, there’s no way we’d just sit here with our arms crossed.”
The president’s strategy is simple but devastatingly effective: put Mexico in a chokehold with a 25% tariff until they take real action against these brutal criminals. And it’s working. Mexico has seized nearly as much fentanyl in the past five months as it did in all of last year. Even more shocking, the Mexican government is now shipping cartel members directly to the U.S. to face justice. Nearly 30 have already been handed over, some of whom could face the death penalty.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi made it clear that this is just the beginning. “As President Trump has made clear, cartels are terrorist groups, and this Department of Justice is devoted to destroying cartels and transnational gangs,” she said. “We will not rest until we secure justice for the American people.”
The message is clear: The days of the Biden-era border chaos are over. Cartel drug production is in freefall, human smuggling operations have dried up, and for the first time in decades, the border is actually secure. The criminals who once treated America’s borders like a revolving door are now facing the harshest crackdown in history.
Yet Trump remains unsatisfied. He knows there’s still more work to be done, and unless Mexico does even more to stop the flow of drugs and criminals, the tariffs will take effect at midnight on Tuesday. With cartel leaders in hiding and their operations collapsing, it’s clear that for the first time in decades, America is back in control of its own border.
